Maternity Photography in Carlsbad

and North County San Diego

Pregnancy is such a strange and beautiful season. Your family is already changing, even before your baby arrives.

My maternity sessions are designed to document that season in a way that feels natural, connected, and true to you.

I photograph maternity sessions with a mix of documentary photography and gentle direction. That means I will capture the real moments between you, your partner, and your family, but I am also happy to step in and pose you for some beautiful portraits when you want them.

You do not have to choose between meaningful, candid images and flattering maternity portraits. You can have both.

Why Documentary Maternity Photography?

Traditional maternity photography often focuses on creating a series of posed portraits. Those can be beautiful, and I am happy to create some of those for you.

But I also want to photograph what this time actually feels like.

The way your partner reaches for your belly without thinking. Your child climbing into your lap before becoming a big brother or sister. The way you laugh together. The quiet moments in between.

Those are often the photographs that become more meaningful with time.

Documentary maternity photography gives you a record of your family as it is right now, before everything changes.

A Mix of Candid and Posed.

Unlike my family sessions, which are almost entirely documentary (with a couple of posed images sprinkled in if a family requests it), maternity sessions can include more guidance and posing.

If you want beautiful portraits of yourself alone, with your partner, or with your children, I will help with positioning, light, and simple direction.

Then I will also step back and photograph what happens naturally.

The result is a gallery that feels polished without feeling overly staged.

Where Can We Have Our Maternity Session?

Your session can take place somewhere that feels meaningful to you.

That might be:

  • At home

  • At the beach

  • On a favorite trail

  • In your neighborhood

  • Somewhere you spend time together as a family

Beach maternity sessions are especially beautiful in North County San Diego, but your session does not need to look like anyone else's.

The best location is usually the one where you feel most comfortable.

What Should I Wear?

You do not need a dramatic maternity gown unless you genuinely love that look. An outfit that highlights your bump, rather than hides it usually works best.

Flowy dresses, fitted dresses, simple tops, jeans, bare feet, layers, and clothing with movement can all photograph beautifully.

I can help you think through clothing before your session so everything works well together without looking overly coordinated.

When Should I Schedule My Maternity Session?

Most maternity sessions take place between about 28 and 34 weeks.

That is usually late enough for your belly to photograph beautifully, while still being early enough that you are likely to feel comfortable moving around.

If you are expecting twins or have other timing considerations, we may want to schedule earlier.

What If I Want My Stretch Marks Removed?

Absolutely. My approach is documentary, but that does not mean you have to keep every temporary or personal detail exactly as it appeared if you would rather have it removed.

If you would like stretch marks, blemishes, bruises, or other small skin details softened or removed, just let me know. I am happy to make those adjustments.

I want you to recognize yourself in your photographs, feel beautiful in them, and genuinely feel good about the images you take home.

What If I Feel Awkward in Front of the Camera?

Most people do.

That is one of the reasons I love combining documentary photography with gentle direction.

You are never expected to perform for the camera for the entire session.

We might create a few more intentional portraits, then move into walking, talking, playing with your children, or simply being together in a documentary style.

That usually helps the session feel much more relaxed.

If you already have children:

I especially love including the things you already do together. That might mean reading books, playing, walking, snuggling, or letting them interact with your belly in their own way.

I will also make time for a few posed maternity portraits, including photographs of you alone, with your partner, and with your family.

The goal is not to fill the session with activities just for the sake of photos. It is to to capture your actual real life and the ways you genuinely spend time together.

What Can We Do During a Maternity Session?

Almost anything that feels like you. If it’s just you and your partner:

  • take a walk on the beach

  • spend time at home

  • explore a favorite trail

  • stop for coffee or ice cream

  • cuddle on the couch

  • cook together

  • date night

  • get baby’s room ready

  • go for a swim (pregnancy underwater photos are beautiful!)

What If I Want Newborn Photos Too?

Maternity is the beginning of a larger story.

Many families choose to continue with a documentary newborn session after their baby arrives.

Newborn sessions focus on your real life together rather than props or complicated posing. Feeding, cuddling, siblings adjusting to the new baby, tired parents, tiny details, and the moments that make those early days unforgettable.

You can also ask about documenting your baby's first year through multiple sessions in a “Year in the Life” membership.
