Vacation Sessions: Documentary Family Photography That Feels Like Your Trip

Last week my family and I were in San Diego, standing on the beach, watching two families with a bunch of kids having the time of their lives.

The kids were completely free and playful. Sandy, soaking wet, running full speed, laughing so hard they could barely breathe. It was one of those moments that hits me right in the chest, because this is exactly what I love to photograph.

This happens to me often. I’ll see a family out in the world and just ache to photograph them. Not because it looks “perfect,” but because it looks true. Because it’s beautiful in the way real life is beautiful.

This time, I had my camera with me.

So I took a risk. I walked up to the mom and asked if I could photograph them, and I did everything I could to reassure her. I showed her my Instagram, my ID, pointed to my own daughter. The full “I promise I’m a normal mom and a family photographer who loves real moments” approach.

beautiful chaos of family life on the San Diego beach.

She graciously said yes.

And for a little while, I photographed exactly what was already happening. No posing. No “everyone look at me.” Just kids being kids at the beach, and parents letting them be wild and happy and free.

It was a big moment for me, because it reminded me that good things can come from simply asking, and that real life is always worth documenting.

What is a vacation session?

A vacation session is exactly what it sounds like: your family, on your trip, doing what you actually do.

Not a stiff photoshoot.
Not a performance.
Not everyone lined up smiling at the camera.

A vacation session is documentary family photography, which means I photograph the story as it unfolds. The play, the chaos, the tenderness, the little in between moments you forget about until you see them again.

Sometimes it’s beach time and tide pools.
Sometimes it’s walking to get ice cream.
Sometimes it’s your rental house breakfast, messy hair, and sunburned cheeks.
Sometimes it’s the quiet at the end of the day when everyone finally slows down.

That is the vacation you’ll want to remember.

Who vacation sessions are perfect for

Vacation sessions are for families who want:

Natural photos, not posed photos
Kids who can move and play and be loud
Images that feel like your life, not a photoshoot
A photographer who can handle real moments and real energy
A record of the trip as it actually felt

If you’re the kind of parent who loves your family best when you’re not trying to make it look perfect, this is for you.

How a travel session works

  1. We choose the setting
San Diego locals: we can do your favorite beach, your neighborhood, or your weekend routine.
Visiting San Diego: we can do your rental, your hotel, the beach, and one simple outing.

  2. We keep it easy and real
I’ll give light guidance when it helps, but mostly I’m watching and anticipating moments. You do not need to “perform.” Your only job is to be with your kids.

  3. You end up with a story
The final gallery looks like your family. Not a version of your family that only exists for photos.

San Diego is made for this

San Diego is one of my favorite places for documentary family sessions because it naturally invites play. Sand, water, space to run, warm light, and that relaxed coastal energy that makes everyone exhale.

time to leave.

Some simple San Diego vacation session ideas:
Beach play at golden hour
Tide pools and exploring
Boardwalk bikes or scooters
Hotel pool time
Ice cream and a walk through town
A slow morning at your rental with coffee and breakfast

You don’t need a big agenda. You just need a slice of real life.

I love this image. Packed all that stuff up, kids in tow, and then noticed the forgotten half-eaten apple left behind. That’s mom life right there.
