Documentary Maternity Photography in Carlsbad: Real Moments, Beautifully Remembered

Pregnancy is such a strange, beautiful in-between season. You’re still a family of two, but not for much longer. Your routines, your relationship, the way you spend a quiet evening together, even the way you walk along the beach are all about to change.

That’s why I approach maternity photography a little differently.

Rather than spending an entire session posing and directing you, I love documenting something that actually feels like your life together.

For this maternity session, the couple chose one of their favorite everyday rituals: walking together on the beach. At the time, they took these walks almost daily, so instead of creating a moment for the camera, we photographed something that was already meaningful to them.

It was their last week as a family of two.

We wandered along the water and cliffs, letting the evening unfold naturally. Later, we returned to their home, where the mom and grandma-to-be (who was visiting from India), made dinner together. These are the photographs I especially love because they preserve more than what pregnancy looked like. They show what their life felt like before their baby arrived. This session was photographed when I lived in Portugal recently, but I’m now doing sessions in Carlsbad.

Can maternity sessions include posed photos?

Absolutely. They can also include retouching if you want your stretch marks removed. Otherwise, I leave them because they are part of your story.

Although my photography is primarily documentary, maternity sessions are one place where I’m happy to incorporate some gentle posing if you would like it.

Some couples want their entire session to unfold naturally with no direction at all. Others love the documentary approach but also want a few beautiful portraits that highlight the pregnancy, the connection between them, or that incredible belly.

We can do both.

I might spend most of your session photographing you walking on the beach, making breakfast at home, playing with an older child, getting ice cream, cooking dinner, or simply spending time together, and then take a few minutes to create some more intentionally composed maternity portraits.

There’s no requirement that you perform for the camera for an hour, and there’s no expectation that you know what to do. The session can still feel relaxed, natural and completely like you.

Maternity photos can be about more than your belly

Of course you’ll want photographs that show your pregnancy. But years from now, you may also want to remember the life surrounding it.

The way your partner looked at you.

The home you were living in.

Your favorite beach.

The dog who had no idea a baby was about to arrive.

Your older child climbing into your lap.

The dinners you cooked together.

The quiet anticipation of waiting for someone you hadn’t met yet but already loved.

Those ordinary pieces of life are what make maternity photographs meaningful.

Documentary maternity photography in Carlsbad and North County San Diego

I photograph maternity sessions in Carlsbad, Encinitas, Oceanside and throughout North County San Diego. Sessions can take place at home, at the beach, during an outing you love, or through a combination of locations.

They are also a great start to a First Year in the Life membership, which includes 4-6 sessions throughout your baby’s first year of life, culminating in a beautiful heirloom album to beautifully tell the story of the year.
