What a Day-in-the-Life Family Photography Session Really Feels Like

One of the reasons I wanted a behind-the-scenes video for my website is because documentary family photography can be hard to explain until you see it.

It is not about standing still, looking at the camera, or pretending your family life is perfectly polished.

It is much more relaxed than that.

The video, created by Gary Roberts of Canyon Creek Productions, shows what a day-in-the-life family photography session actually feels like: children playing, parents connecting, real moments unfolding, and me photographing the story as it happens.

There are moments at home, moments outside, moments of movement, mess, tenderness, and play — the kinds of ordinary moments that become extraordinary with time.

What documentary family photography really looks like

A documentary family photography session is not about performing for the camera.

You do not need a perfect house, perfectly behaved children, matching outfits, or a carefully planned activity list.

You just need your real life.

I will not direct or pose you, but I am also not a silent fly on the wall. I will chat and laugh with you when it feels natural, and I will quietly observe at other times. My job is to help everyone feel comfortable while still leaving room for real moments to unfold.

That might look like making breakfast, painting at the kitchen table, playing in the backyard, exploring outside, blowing bubbles, cuddling, laughing, getting messy, or wandering through the desert together.

The point is not to make your family look like someone else’s.

The point is to preserve what your life feels like right now.

A small note about being on camera

I will also admit: being on the other side of the camera was vulnerable.

Like many moms, I know how easy it is to notice the things you wish looked different. Watching yourself on video can feel uncomfortable.

But I tried to look past that and see the meaning instead.

I saw the care, attention, and purpose behind the work. And that is what I hope my clients are able to see in their own photographs, too.

Not perfection.

Meaning.

Because one day, your children will not be studying whether everything looked flawless. They will be looking for you, for the way you loved them, and for the way their childhood felt.

Watch the behind-the-scenes video

You can watch the new behind-the-scenes film on my homepage. It was created by Gary Roberts of Canyon Creek Productions, and I am so grateful for the way he captured the heart of my work.

My hope is that the video helps you see what a session with me really feels like.

Relaxed. Honest. Playful. Unscripted. Meaningful.

Your family does not need to be perfect to be photographed beautifully.

Your real life is enough.
